vietnamese gardenia

Does your vietnamese gardenia smells strangely of michelia to you? The new flower (when it still has the color white) smells fruity..which reminds me of michelia coco and pineapple. Very strange. :)

Th-th-thanks Kem. Now I am going to add this to my collection this week. I saw some at a local nursery here (Armstrong) and gave them a pass because they weren't in bloom. I didn't know the scent is that unique from other gardenias.

I miss the scent of Michelia coco and there is such a long wait for these to bloom every year...I suppose the Vietnamese gardenia should be more floriferous.

Tell me what it smells like to you when yours blooms. The aged flowers smell minty which I dont like. But its new flowers smell very nice.

Lol no clue. You are in CA I'm sure you can find it at your local nursery. Look for aglaia odorata too when you are there :). I had to buy these plants online.

I made DH take me to Ranch 99 hoping to find some but no such luck. They had lots of money trees and orchids but no Jasmine or Aglaia Odorata. I will call around tomorrow. Where did you get yours?

Little fact! "The best choice for beginner. This pretty plant has been called "gardenia" for long time. However, analysis shows that it is a horticultural form of Kailarsenia. In fact, taxonomically Gardenia vietnamensis is not a valid species. In physical comparison of flowers from this plant and Kailarsenia lineata, the differences are miniscule except the broader leaves on the "k. vietnamensis". Rubiaceae specialist Christian Puff, as well as taxonomist John Mood confirm that they are the same plant florally. Gardenias do not have a seed capsule with distinct ridges on the fruit, and both plants produce seed capsules with ridges. " and can not seem to find it here in the uk surprise surprise :(

So it's not really a Gardenia then? That's fine by me b/c I'm a gardenias killer. Maybe I have better luck w/ this one. If I can find one that is.
