I happen to have a new magazine dealing only to Osmanthus from Journal of Nanjing Forestry University, China. It has an article about old Osmanthus trees in Yunnan. But it does not identify the the species. Most are 100 to 300 years old. One is at 700 years old but in poor condition. The old trees are found at 1240 Meters to 3423 Meters elevation. Their color can be creamy white to yellow. One other article mentions that O. forrestii Rehder is synonyms to O. yunnanensis (Franchet) P.S. Green. Also O. forestii var.brepedicellatua Handel-Mazzetti is synonyms to O. yunnanensis (Franchet) P. S. Green.

A scattering of old bushes as tall as 16 1/2 feet up here. Sometimes hurt by cold winters. Sawtooth leaf margins interesting. See TREES OF SEATTLE - SECOND EDITION, page 301.

Hi longriver and bboy, thanks for the info. Was starting to wonder where you guys went. Have not seen Ron_B in a long time either. When I got this plant from the Portland Classical Chinese Garden I did not realize how much they meant when they labeled it as relatively rare. My online search has had very little yield. So far it's been growing well, putting out new buds, and no pests. |

I am back home. I was in China again wondering many places for a month from late march to April. Here is a tip for you that you can root Os easily by moist perlite and a clean pot, enclosed in a clear poly bag. Keep it at a warm and bright area, no direct sun. Rooting powder helps.

Must have been a very exciting and fun trip! Where are your pictures :-) I use the polybag technique for most other plants like jasmines and gardenia or just leaving them in water which has been very effective. Was planning on air layering the Os (fragrans, delavayi, and yunnanensis) but I will definitely give the poly bag a try. Thanks again.

PLANT LOCATOR - WESTERN REGION sourcebook lists forestfarm, Williams, OR and Cistus nursery, Sauvie Island, OR for Osmanthus yunnanensis. Cistus was involved in the Chinese garden, the specimen you bought may have come from them.
