Training lilac as standard?

Hi folks,

I live in Australia and lilacs are pretty uncommon here - I've never actually seen or smelled one. I'm totally fascinated by them though, so I hope to plant one (or two or three... You know how it goes!). There are a few nurseries around that sell lilacs (very limited range though), and I haven't found anywhere in Australia at all that sells them as grafted standards.

I have a spot in mind, near my roses, that gets heaps of sun, but a standard would be more suitable than a shrub form. So I'm wondering if I can train a cutting-grown lilac into a standard form successfully? If so, are there any particular species or cultivars that would be more suited to this treatment than others? Frangrance is most important, but I'd prefer to have blooms purple/pink/mauve than white or yellow.

Thanks!
