Can't seem to get gardenia to bloom

My sister has an indoor gardenia (I don't know the variety), which is gloriously green and healthy, but doesn't want to flower. Any tips on how to get it to bloom? This plant is her baby: it sits in a sunny spot beneath the skylight and is watered frequently. We'd appreciate any tips; thanks.

Gardenia likes the environment, hot and humid. Most commercial Gardenia flowers in U S are shipped from central America. At the coast cities of Washington state, I saw gardenia beared only a few blooms compared to that of California. I know a green house helps flower buds formation.

Other common factors such as fertilizer, sunlight, even general growth and maturity condition are part of possibilities. You might ask your local nursery people to find out how.

I'd guess not enough light -- it may look bright under the skylight, but the plant is a long way from the glass, and the quality of the light degrades over distance.

If there's any chance to put it outside where it gets at least half a day's direct sun, or in a sunny window, your chances of flowering are improved. Just be careful to increase the light gradually by shading the plant in its new spot, rather than dumping it in full sun and burning the leaves.

Also, be careful not to let it dry out totally or it'll drop any buds it's made faster than you can say "bye-bye!"

Finally, prayers and sacrifices to the gardenia gods may not help, but they can't hurt!

Cold nighttime temperatures help as well.

All of these hints will help. Also, syringing or spraying them daily with a cool mist will help them. They can also be fed a bit of acidic flower food from time to time.

This came from a book that I have, i've tried stuff out of it and it worked for me. For flower buds to form a night temperature of 60-65 is required, and during the day it should be about 10 degrees higher. An even temperature and careful watering are needed to prevent bud drop. Light: bright light is essential, but avoid direct midday sun in summer. Water: keep compost moist at all times-reduce watering in winter. Air Humidity: mist leaves frequently. Thats what the book said, so I hope this helps.

Thanks all for sage advice! I have passed it on to my sister, and promise you'll be the first to know should any blooms appear.
Thanks again,
Laura
