Unhappy Gardenias

I planted my gardenias last fall and they seemed to do well until spring. They then began getting a great deal of yellow leaves and thinned out quite a bit. The nursery said this was normal however now I have noticed big chew marks on the leaves and the plant looks unhealthy. Also, I saw some sort of bug with a large, light green round back making a web next to the flower. I have treated them with insecticide yet they still don't look too good.
