Downfall of my gardenias, week one (pics)

Thought you might enjoy watching them croak, so here is week one (a few days after getting them via mail order). Watch as they croak, buds drop off, etc. Like a snuff film only vegetative.

Mersiepoo, they look great so far! The hardy one looks just like the one I got from Logees. My fortuniana was a big plant though- was on sale at that time.

The fortuniana is doing great for me, blooming as we speak. I had it by a window where it got about 2 hrs of afternoon sun and I noticed the plant started to slow down, the buds weren't developing anymore. So I moved it off to one side and now it barely gets any direct sun at all and it's blooming.

The hardy species is unfortunately hibernating or something.

Hi Notanatural!

Yeah, it is weird, my un-fortunata seems to be still alive (I hope it didn't hear me say that or else it'll lose its buds), but the 'hardy gardenia' is starting to lose its leaves. I'll take a pic of them in a few days. The lower leaves are either turning yellow, and others are turning black! Hardy my foot!

I got them from logees too...these first photos are from when i unpacked them, that's why they still look alive. ;)

Yeah, now that you mention it, I moved the hardy out of the sun, maybe that is why it started turning black and gold...

When did you get your gardenias? Glad to hear you got one that is blooming, congratulations!! :)

Nota, since gardenias prefer cool temps, maybe the south sun was heating the plant too much..
Think about those who plant directly in garden in full sun, and how well they do..I think the reason the plant looks good is because it's betting fresh air, unlike our stuffy homes..Just an opinion..

Mersi, actually, your denia's look good..What size pot are they growing in? Did you first soak clay before potting into them? Clay had a tendency to dry soil if they're not first soaked..Most ppl recommend an hour or more.
But so far they look good..Keep fingers crossed..LOL..when will you plant the hary outdoors? Toni

Hi Hopeful,

thanks! But of course they just got unpacked, so they're going to try and get my hopes up before they explode into flames. Soon to see next weeks pictures.

Re the clay pots, actually I have a 'wick' system for the gardenias, they come out of the drainage holes and soak up water. Not sure if this will work or not, but worth a try. :)

Mersiepoo, forgot to comment on your 'wick' system..I think it's a great idea..It'd especially work for ppl who tend to overwater..u know? Spread the word, you just may have something there..too bad you can't patent the idea..LOL

LOL, explode into flames..oh goodness.

Did you place your new plants outside or in the house where you can keep an eye on them?
You guys are so lucky..the last few times I ordered from Logees, what I got were a few 2" plants, that died within a wk..especially a so-called variegated citrus..Though I'd love to go to their nursery in person..too far a drive though..
Anyway, we'll see what happens next week..post pics then..I bet they'll do better..Toni

Hi H.A.!

Thanks for the ego boost, :) but I read about a wick system in a magazine somewhere (for other plants...heh heh). Anyway, so far it 'seems' to be working, at least for the fortunata. The 'hardy' gardenia is starting to get burnt tips (see, told you they'd burst into flames), and it's not really in the sun. Not sure what is going on, I gave it a good watering and we'll see what happens. I'm going to post next weeks pics of the gardenia.

BTW, I've gotten some plants from logees that bit it after I had them for a week or so, if you get any bum plants make sure to call them within like 15 days (i know, not much time) and they'll replace them free of charge. I got a mentha requenni (sp) that bit the dust right away, the replacement plant they sent was huge, but also died too. They told me they like water...huh! Didn't work out.

I might call Logees about this 'hardy' gardenia, it seemed to start croaking the day after I took it out of the box. Maybe it's just stressed, or maybe it's my bad breath, lol!

I'm not brave enough to plant them outside (or even let them sniff the outdoor air, lest they catch cold and wilt immediately)....

On to post this weeks photo gallery of the damned. :)

WEEK 2:

Okay, so far the unfortunata seems to be doing okay. The 'not so hardy' seems to have its lower leaves turning black and falling off. They both have cotton wicks in the dirt that leads to the bottom and into the gravel and trays. I mist them both every day. I think I might have to start yelling at one of them to 'get with the program'!
