Gardenia Surprise

Hi all,

I was weeding around a small Gardenia 'Radicans' today when I saw something on it I never expected to see. A seed pod. I had read that the 'Jasminoides' varieties rarely set seed.

I'd like to save and plant them, only there is something of a problem. The seed pod is on the end of a set of branches that have turned completely brown. The seed pod is the only bit of green left on it, and it is beginning to brown itself at the top. I just don't know if the seeds have ripened enought yet to pull off the seed pod. Should I just leave it alone until the pod turns completely brown and then pull it off and open it?

Unless someone has experience and advice, that's most likely what I'll do.

Thanks.

P.S. I think I will post this at the seed growing forum as well. Maybe someone there will know.

RE: Gardenia Surprise

I am not sure whether is it a fresh seed pod or last years'?

I had experience to germinate hundreds of gardenia seeds and produce hundreds of tiny seedlings like alfafa sprouts. Because the seeds are very tiny in flake shape. Now I only have 7 small seedling plants left, in one gal pot.

Hi longriver,

It is definitely from this year. The pod is slowly turning brown. I've been checking on it every day.

Sounds like it is difficult growing gardenias from seed. Keep me posted as to how yours turn out.

Thanks for the reply.
