I'd say a viburnum anne russell, the colours are outstanding in the fall and the smell is pretty good too.

You mean viburnum carlesii, right? Have seen v. juddii listed as Korean Spice, too, so it gets confusing. To add to that, have heard the latter is also very fragrant and better for cold climates than carlesii, and I know people who have one and love theirs.

The place below has a couple different kinds of carlesii. I have a newish 'Aurora' that had a very nice, potent scent in spring and is growing quickly in spite of the fact that any mail order plant is probably going to be pretty small. If you want to start with a good sized one, I'd shop around your area because there's a good chance a local nursery might have it. If you can stand to wait till next spring, you might even be able to smell for yourself! Good luck!!!

Yes I was thinking of carlesii actually. I thank you both for posting links to site, now to decide which :). I had searched and searched, maybe I had the spelling wrong I could only come up with wholesalers. As far as nurseries around here, I have not had the best luck with fragrants. We have traveled looking for a number of them, and just aren't finding what we want. I suppose this upcoming spring may bring better luck, now they are reducing stock and there isn't much to choose from.

Btw, I also have a burkwoodii 'Mowhawk' that has a beautiful shape and fall foliage show, but when I compared the two scents in spring, carlesii won by a nose. Har har....

XJudii is a hybrid with Carlesii. The Breeder (Judd) wrote it is as fragrant and gives better branching habit, and better mildew resistance. The Burkwoodii 'Mohawk' has nice fragrance and color, more upright less rounded bush form form. Which one did you end up selecting?

I have carlesii and burkwoodii. Carlesii has a stronger fragrance. The foliage of burkwoodii is a bit neater. Both take pruning very well and are tough plants in my zone.
