I agree I love rich scents. That's why I grow tuberoses,gardenias,roses,jasmines.... I really don't have a good nose to smell lightly scented flowers. The heavier the better! As far as light scents I think there fine too but it should be a gorgeous flower to make up for lack of scent. Bring on the wafting old lady perfume in my garden! lol! btw I have a St Bernard so I need heavy scents to ..neutralize.. in my yard if you know what I mean.

Mmmm...old lady scents - bring them on! Seems to me that we Northern gardeners don't have enough of them. I have to coax my tuberoses along and am lucky to have moonflowers by September. Jasmines I can buy in Chinatown and grow in pots, but I'm so envious of all of you who can just grow them by the back door. And gardenias - I've killed so many I can't count them anymore. My biggest success this season is datura, started from seed in the basement and by some miracle HUGE and blooming like crazy already. Love that scent!

jscanlin what datura do you grow that is fragrant? I have a triple yellow that well smells bad. Lovely but not pretty smell.

I grow D. inoxia - the flowers bloom only at night, big single white trumpets with a truly lovely perfume. On a still August night they scent the whole garden. I've grown the double yellow D. metel as well, and for me, the first night they're open, they smell wonderful, but after that the scent seems to "turn" even though they look nice for a few days. Of course, the leaves of both species smell terrible, so I try to just sniff the flowers without touching the rest of the plant :)

Got to get some D.inoxia. I'm growing some seedlings now but I think they are all metel.
