I am trying to find out whether or not M. yunnanensis is fragrant. I have read a few online profiles and descriptions range from no or a very weak scent to better than M. figo. Can somebody who actually grows this plant comment on thier fragrance? The cultivar available locally is "scented pearl" but is it really scented???

I don’t know the Australian cultivar "scented pearl". But they are prominently scented.

Thanks snasxs.
They dont have as nice a growth habit as figos so I'll stick with the "coco" cultivar. Beautiful scent.

I have the following comments:

1. The name should be Magnolia dianica. You might be using an obsolete name.

2. M Coco is a different plant. Please use less confusing name. See discussion below:

3. M dianica can grow into up-right tree. See discussion below:

The fragrant flowers of the real Magnolia Coco are revered like gardenia.

The image below is a wild species:

Thankyou snasxs fo your replies.

You are right about M.yunnanensis having been changed to Magnolia dianica. Unfortunately here in Oz they are still marketed under the old name and the most commonly available cultivar is the compact, shrubby form "scented pearl".

There is a hybrid variety that is commonly vailable here named Michelia "Coco" which I believe is a cross between M. figo and M. doltsopa. This plant has larger leaves than figo and large custard yellow flowers with a very strong, sweet scent. Magnolia coco is not offered comercially but is a beautiful plant!

The only other varieties I have seen offered for sale is Michelia "Lady of the Night" which appears to be a large flowered form of M. figo.
M. "bubbles" and M. "Mixed up miss" are vailable in the eastern states but I have not seen them offered locally.
I will continue to try and source a M. x Alba and M. champaca but so far I haven't had any luck.
