I'd be reluctant to prune the roots, unless it is root bound. That is usually the main reason for repotting, but you could re-pot to amend the soil.

I took it out of the pot to examine the roots, and it rather looks as if there are more roots than potting mix at this point. So, unless someone has dire warnings to the contrary, I think I'll go ahead and chop off some of the rootball.

Unless you plan to move it to ever larger pots, I think pruning is the way to go. I've never tried with a Jasmine (I bought mine less than 2 months ago), but I wouldn't hesitate. They look tough. Good luck!

I used a bread knife to cut off about 1/3 of the entire rootball yesterday, and I found that the roots were really densely packed in the middle. I then repotted somewhat loosely in potting mix with some Indoor/Outdoor Osmocote and garden iron thrown in, and the plant seems no worse. A few new shoots that had sprouted prior to the operation have continued to grow, so I tentatively conclude that sambac can pretty easily tolerate losing 30% of its rootball.

Thanks for this page, I have a Jasmine that I don't want to seperately because it's not large but the roots have taken over the pot. I think I'll pot up and prune 30% of it's roots so maybe it'll produce a second bloom this year :)

I'm going to try this as well. I have jasmine that I started form a cutting about 15 years ago...it's in a a large pot and appears to be root bound. If I were to go up a size in pot I would no longer be able to lift it, it would be huge. So I'm going to try cutting back 1/3 of the roots, replacing the soil, and putting it back in the same pot. Hope this works!
