Is this your own plant and if so, I think you are on to something. How did you get it to bloom so lovely with what kind of care? It would be wonderful if they could be as big as a rose as a whole!

Hi Snasx, I think more realistic approach would be to mutate them rather than genetic engineering which may be really expensive (look up Suntory expensive and unsuccessful attempt to genetically engineer a blue rose).

I think in Thailand, they will irradiate plants (bulbs, tubers, or seeds) to produce mutants, usually resulting in variegated plants. And in America, plants such as Daylilies and Mangolias are inentionally made into tetraploid to breed with. Tetraploid specimens can be created if exposed to colchicine as seedlings. And tetraploid plants tend to be larger or larger flowers.

The problem is, I've never seen any variety of Jasminum sambac set seed before. Are they all sterile or just require diligence in hand pollinating to breed them?

Hmm, I think they used some easy genetic technique to create the very large cyclamen plants.

i wonder if a jasmine would respond to gibberillic acid in the way that camellia flowers do?
that is sometimes used on camellias (called "gibbing") to increase size, texture, keeping quality and promote earlier flowering.
of course, it is not a permanent change and has to be done for each season's flower buds.

jeff, I don't think so. The jasmine flower last a very short period of time.
