Variegated jasmine?

| Hi,
I am familiar with the regular 'jasminum sambac' but this is the first time I've seen this 'kind':
Is this true variegation, or some insect or chemical burn? Anybody else here has this 'variegated' variety of 'jasminum sambac'?
For comparison, here's the usual 'jasminum sambac':

Tropical, Wow, what a beauty!! It looks variegated to me. The variegation is too symetical to be chemical burn..Definately not fertilizer burn. Where did you find it? Toni |

| Hi Toni, I bought the 'variegated' jasminum sambac at a local nursery just a few kilometers away from my home. It actually caught my attention because among the 40+ 'jasminum sambac' plants that were displayed at their nursery, it was the only one that had this 'unique' variegation. All the rest had the usual uniform green color. I actually asked the owner of the nursery if it is 'variegated' or just some 'chemical burn' or 'infection' but she seems unsure. I'm still observing the plant to confirm if it is indeed true variegation that spontaneously arose from 'mutation' at the nursery where I bought it, or if it is some chemical burn or pest damage. tropical |

| Come to think of it, what makes plants develop 'variegation' and why does variegation spontaneously happen at all in nature? I always considered variegated versions of 'citrus', 'gardenias', etc. as 'freaks' of nature. Would it be possible to 'force' a plant to develop variegation by exposure to say, some chemicals or some 'X-ray' or 'UV' radiation? It would be nice to produce a variegated rose or a variegated 'michelia alba' if it's at all possible to do it 'artificially'. tropical |

Tropical, I don't doubt there's a 'sci-fi experimentation way' to develop variegated plants. Science has created/invented some unsual things, including edibles..Ever see those Super Huge Tomatoes? They were dicussed on the news; it was as large or larger than a grapefruit. Unfortunetly, I'm not the one to ask when it comes to scientific explainations..LOL Do you know Randy and his son Sherm? They grow tons of variegated plants..heck, they hunt for variegated plants.. He even has var weeds, poison ivy, Petunia, palms, Clivia, you name it, he has it. His site addy is www.raretropicals.com I think..It was last time I visited. Your Jasmine looks varigated to me..Hey Tropical, you lucked out. Be happy..LOL..It's truly beautiful. Toni |
