Can You Identify this Nice Fragrant Plant?

The small flower grow along all small branches is measured at 1/2 inch in diameter. It has been blooming for one week. I can enjoy the desirable fragrance about three feet away, particularily in the evenning. My bush is about 7 feet tall in a 25 gal pot.

Longriver,

Do you have a picture of the whole plant? I was just in SF a few weeks ago and didn't see anything like this in the Strybing Arboretum, now I'm really curious!

I do not think it is a local plant. I have never seen it in SF Bay Area. I got it from my sister. This plant can be rooted. The small branches and tips are flexible in nature. I like to collect fragrant plants. It is very important to me that the profile of the fragrance should be universally desirable. Early this year, my house area had 10 days under freezing temperature( mostly in the evenning) and this plant survives.

I had to gave away a three feet plant to my good friend from Portland last week who smalled the fragrance, causing the unreasonable demand. Now I need to root more cuttings. I just catched the last min. of day light to take this picture.

Longriver...... I would love to have one of your cuttings when you get them rooted... I will pay your for it.
I really enjoyed the peach iris's that you sent me.
They bloomed beautifully. The Osmanthus plants did not make it for some reason. Thanx again.Marilyn

From the leaves, I'm wondering if it's a cleyera japonica, a camellia relative -- do a google search, and I think you'll find the flowers match up. I've heard it's fragrant, but never a first-nose report! Glad to hear it does well for you, I'll have to look into this one now!

Jimshy: Very likely. I also sent my pictures to my friend ( a botanist) in China. Japanese use this plant for ceremony and they need a lot. The plant also grows in China. My friend once run a business to export the plant branch cuttings by air to catch the ceremony timely in Japan. I am looking forward to hear from him.
Thanks for your effort.

Cleyera japonica is correct. The plant I came from Taiwan. Taiwan has a few varieties. It also grows variety)in central-south China, Okinawa and south of japan(possible other variety). Taiwan was once occupied by Japan for 50 years till after WWII. Japanese use it as a sacred Plant for ceremony.

Jimshy, I know that you have 'too many' plants already. If my cuttings can be rooted, do you want a small plant? . It is an award you won.(Likely next year).

John,

Suncrest has the variegated cultivar of this species. Magic Gardens in Berkeley used to have one mature specimen on display. When well grown, it forms a dome of cascading branches with glossy variegated leaves. Come visit my garden and you can take all the cuttings you want.

Thanks! Daxin. May be I need one more plant. My trade balance is giving 5 plants and receiving 1 plant to keep ecology sound in my yard.

Daxin, I bought a very large size variegated plant in one gal container. The price was only $10 from Moraga Garden Center nursery. I am after the fragrance quality, not necessary all for the showy flower. The fragrance of my green leaf Cleyera is hard to beat.

I wonder if anyone can tell me about a plant a friend gave me. She called it the Star of David. It has small green leaves on vines and apparently will someday produce small white flowers. I am not sure if they have a fragrance.
Thanks.
