please help my dying new nightblooming jasmine :-(

Hi there,
My new night blooming jasmine plant is in desperate need of help ... I live in Palm Beach, Florida, so it is plenty hot out on the balcony where i put the plant. It stands about 2 feet tall but within days of purchase, withered dry and looks dead. I didnt want to give it too much water, do you think it didnt get enough? I thought it likes the heat... but it is not in direct sunlight all day - I face southeast.
I just replanted it in a bigger pot with a bag of soil today - does it want plant food too?
I was so hoping for that wonderful smell, but nothing yet, just crispy green or yellow turned leaves.
Any advice you can possibly offer would be most helpful. Thank you so much.
Tami

What crazy weather we are having! I did not experience that mine appreciate the heat here much either and I have always thought there is something with the way I was culturing. It was sorry looking during the hottest part of the year, however the plant is showing signs of quickly recovering once the temp cooled off a bit.

Try well water with every watering and let the top soil *slightly* dry out between watering. It may be a good idea to move it to a much cooler location that is completely out of direct sun. If you have some bone meal sprinkle a pinch on top of the soil surface the next time you water to help it gain back it's own vigor and strength.

Hope you didn't forget to add some drainage material mixed in with the soil. Good Luck!

You have to keep in mind that a balony is really an artificial environment and potentially hostile environment for most plants. Balconies can be difficult because of all that concrete (tend to bake in the sun) and the also the fact that most can be quite windy. It sounds as though your jasmine got too dried out. The fact that you replanted it should help in keeping it moister (larger pots stay wetter longer). It should recuperate though. Mine looses ALL its leaves over the winter (I leave it in an unheated garage that get cold because I have no space for it inside and it gets too big by the time I have to protect it from frost.) If your terrace is very exposed and windy, you might consider constructing something to reduce the wind/provide some protection from direct sun, etc.. Depending on your living circumstance, you might have to check the rules and regulations before doing any projects with that balcony. Good luck!
