Ants farming aphid-looking bugs on Gardenia

I move from zone 4 to 8. I have sporadic spider mites before. I place two pots of beautiful large-double gardenia on the porch. It has been more than a month. The plants look wonderful in full sun.

However I notice this morning there are lots of aphid-looking bugs on the lower reaches of the stems. It seems they have wax-coat – like scales. I also notice the ants are farming these on the stems. I suspect the ants brought these on the stems. The ants walk up and down protect and care for these. I have to scrape these off with my nails. Yuk.

hello, snasxs, I had aphids on my roses and I sprayed it (saturating the stems) with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide ( table spoon) isopropyl alcahol (table spoon) and murphy's oil (table spoon) in about 1 litre of warm water. i sprayed them few weeks ago and have not seen any come back - i prayed them 2 consecutive days. maybe that will work for you. the measurements are approximate since I just pour the stuff into a spray bottle of water. I would suggest also use ant spray around the bottom of the pots. good luck.

Hello, snaxs. Mold is secreted by sucking insects such as aphids, cottony cushion scale, mealybugs and whiteflies (as well as the whitefly's nymphs. If you control those insects, the ants will no longer have a reason to be there.

Luis,

The bugs on my plant look slightly like whitefly’s nymphs. However, they are larger; and they do not change into whiteflies. The colors range from light green, green, to golden brown, or rarely dark brown. I don’t know what they are. But they surely are causing headache. I hope you can recommend some commercial products, safe for gardenia, and available at Wal-Mart, etc.
