trying to identify a very fragrant tree

bigmusic

I was given a small tree transplant from a friend. It was planted about five years ago and is now just large enough to sit under. It is extremely fragrant, like jasmine. In fact the buds are mauve/pink clusters opening white, and look like jasmine blossoms. The tree is rather ugly for a good part of the year. It looks like a stick and bare branches just stuck in the ground. Then in late spring the leaves begin to appear and in late summer the blossoms begin to open. They look a bit like pea blossoms when closed, but like jasmine when they open. the leaves are large, single lobed and velvety on the top. Any ideas?
