Deciduous Magnolias can be very fragrant...

I haven't had much of an oppurtunity to smell these flowers, but I was at an outdoor shopping mall last month that had some Magnolias in these gigantic pots, which I believe were 'Jane' Magnolias. I couldn't resist and picked a couple of flowers. :) I was amazed that they were flowering in the summer! Anyways, the scent was delicious. It was deep, slightly spicy, and somewhat rose-like. A single flower has a good wafting ability too indoors, as I experienced when I left one on my nightstand. And the center was so beautiful, being so brilliantly colored.

I was very surprised as I thought the fragrances on these deciduous magnolias were weak scented. I recall seeing them at a garden center and detected no fragrance at all from a yellow one and another pink one. So apparently, some varieties are more fragrant than others.
