Gardenia setting up seed pods

Posted by forever_a_newbie z7/8 VA (My Page) on

One of our gardenia bushes (the single-petal type, lost name tag) has set a few pods. I've counted 3 of them. A very nice bright red colour.
I wonder how I can tell when they are ready to harvest. And anyone could give any advice germinating the seeds?

Congratulations! From what I gathered through googling, you are to wait until the pods fall off.

I'm currently germinating some seeds right now, I used potting soil and slightly covered them. I have a few developed roots in 11 days. You can try the wet paper towel method too, they will sprout faster.

Thanks, Kemistry.
Good to know that I need to wait for the pods to fall off (or go brown).
I'm just very curious to see what will they will end up with
Happy ThanksGiving

I don't think it's necessary to wait for them to fall off- just to turn mushy. Let the pods dry before crumbling the seeds out to plant very early spring. I have over 500 seedlings of Daisy x Chuck Hayes and reciprocal crosses this year, and some Daisy x Mystery from the year before.

I really want to continue breeding for cold hardiness. I already have a selection from Daisy x Mystery that didn't show any cold damage from 0F. I don't have room in my yard for 500 more gardenias so if you know anyone who lives around Tennessee who would like 500 gardenia seedlings to field test for me I would give them away- with the only condition that I could come air layer some selections later in the future.
