Fragrant Woody Ornamentals/Shrubs Suggestions

Posted by plantmarker z7 NC (My Page) on

Hello -

I am looking for suggestions on some of the most fragrant woody ornamentals, large or small, including larger-growing varieties, such as Osmanthus.

I live in Zone 7, in N.C. The plants will be a part of the year-round landscape, so hardiness is very important.

I know about Osmanthus, Daphne and Gardenia. I would like to know which specific cultivars of these you might recommend.

Also, I would like to know what other plants you would suggest I take a look at.

Thank you so much.

Have you been to this place? Probably see some things there that would knock you out.

Here is a link that might be useful: JC Raulston Arboretum - Home Page

Calcanthus floridus or Carolina allspice and viburnum "burkwoodii" (spelling?)...blooms briefly but the scent is unbelievable!

Keep the Styrax americanus in your mind. It's too bad it doesn't do well here in our hot desert.

Loropetalum chinensis should be hardy for you -- the plain white kind.

I would also investigate yellow banksia rose and the various native azaleas (particularly atlanticum), and the native magnolia.

You might want to study the Woodlanders catalog. Just Google it.

Try internet to find a small type and hardy Magnolia. Many of them have wonderful fragrance.
