Impulse brunfelsia buy- Now what?

I fell victim to an end-of-season 60% off sale. I was very good and got things on my list but the scent from the 5 gallon pot of ragged but still blooming brunfelsia "yesterday, today, tomorrow " stole away my brain.

I try to avoid toxic plants in my garden because I don't know who will cluelessly own the place after I move on, and I don't need a poisoned dog or toddler on my conscience. But here I am with my pot of highly toxic yet beautiful brunfelsia, wondering how to care for the thing and how I can reasonably expect it to behave.

I am in a fairly hot dry place, San Jose, CA. Anybody have some experience with these plants other than exotic house plants or tropical Florida lawn trees?

Hi Pea,

You might get more help on the California Gardening forum.

I'm assuming you have Brunfelsia australis.
A partially shaded spot protected from the wind seems the best spot for it.

Robert, thanks for the book suggestion, I haven't seen that one before, it looks pretty good! It's odd to live in CA, you can move a climate zone by travelling a mile sometimes. I used to live in the PNW, pretty similar climate up and down the west side cities there, from Victoria to Seattle to Portland my yard looked the same.
