Help Us Rose Folks (LONG)

Friend who publishes a rose newsletter said, " I'm tired of hearing (on rose forums) people asking for shade tolerant roses that will just languish. Why don't you write an article for the newsletter on fuchsias?"

Since we fuchsia afficianados are less busy this time of year, I thought you might want to tell me a bunch of pearls that you would tell someone considering the wonderful world of these colorful plants for the first time. If you would like to help with this project, please send to me by email whether or not you post on this forum.

Possible topics, but feel free...
watering, fertilizing, choosing, hardiness zone issues, where to grow or not grow, where to order, online resources-forums, photo galleries (your equivalent of rose porn), mistakes to avoid, preparing soil, pest problems, no spray approaches, societies to join or info resources -like this forum.

I'll thank any contributors in advance and look forward to hearing from fellow fuchsia fanciers.

RE: Help Us Rose Folks (LONG)

I have only one fuchsia, photo below, and it has grown very large as you can see. I believe it is called Gartenmeister Bonstedt. It blooms nearly year round; however, last week I trimmed it down to about knee-high, just a bunch of sticks now. It'll come back. I never have any problems with pests or disease on this one; it's just happy in its shady corner. I do need to give it plenty of water in the summer.

I've tried to keep hanging fuchsias in pots, but in our hot, dry summers, however, they require too much water and can collapse easily if they don't get what they need.

Yes, that is Gartenmeister. Lovely garden you have there.
