 o
Fuchsia magellanica in Tierra del Fuego

I thought people might like a shot of a Fuchsia growing in its natural habitat. This plant was growing in a garden in Ushuaia, Argentina, which is said to be the most southerly town in the world. It is latitude 55 deg S. The climate is COLD. Although we were there in early summer it never rose above 10C 50F. It can also be extremely windy, though this plant did have a little protection. We were amazed at how tough these and other plants were, but there is a crucial factor: despite the almost constant cold, the climate is maritime and frost is rarely severe and never prolonged. I was told that fuschias would only grow there right at sea level, even at a a couple of hundred feet of altitude frost would kill them, but you would never be able to grow this plant in Texas!
