Fuschia cuttings

Posted by kaysbelle z5IL (kaysbelle@yahoo.com) on

I planted a hardy fuschia last year. I wasn't sure it would survive so I took six cuttings before the frost. (I was afraid the hardy fuschia may not make it through the winter.)Now I have six cuttings that are about 12" tall. They have been covered with a large plastic bag to insure humidity. My question is: Now what do I do. They don't have very thick stems but are standing tall. Should I try to make a bonsai plant out of a couple of them or just pot them for now and plant them in my garden this spring? Or should I try something else - pot them as house plants? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Hi Kaysbelle

Any clues as to what the variety is as this will give some indication of the type of growth.

There are a few things you can do with the cuttings, but I will wait until I know more before I give any suggestions.

I don't know the variety. Any general suggestions?

Hi Kaysbelle

Not knowing what cultivar you are dealing with doesn’t give you as many options, I am no expert on bonsai (I know my limitations and leave that to Kath) but I do know that certain varieties DO NOT lend themselves to this type of growth.

If the cuttings are growing upright and are strong I think I would suggest that you let a couple of them grow on as single stem standards, another 2 could be twined around each other and grown as a multi stem decorative standard. The remaining plants could have the tips nipped out as another couple of cuttings and grown on as normal bush plants.

Lots of things you can do and the site below (it is the BFS Rules and Guidance but it shows just what can be achieved) might assist.

Hope this helps

The fuchsia I have is Fuchsia magellanica.
