| I live in an area were growing fuchsias has always been easy. They love to grow here, and I've always have had them in my shade garden. Now I have learned a new cuss word (well actually two words), gall mites. I have lost two fuchsias to them, before I found this forum. I was spraying fungicides on them, because it looks like peach leaf curl.
I have just finished heavily pruning my fuchsias and removed all the foliage. Should I spray Sevin now or wait until they start to leaf out? Should I remove all my fuchsias and start over? Some of them are at least 15 years old, so I help I can save them. Thanks for your help.

Oh that's awful Lenora. At the moment we don't have a problem with them. Here is advice from a friend of mine who lives and has a nursery in California. See link below - Kath :)

I'm taking this all in because I have a large and beloved Fuchsia collection and the mites seem headed my way. What I am also concerned about is the effect various insecticides would have on the Hummingbirds that call my garden home. I wouldn't use a systemic one like isotox but I wonder if it would be safe to use sevin. I suppose if I picked all the flowers off it might be safer for them. Aleta

Sorry I can't help personally Aleta, but why don't you send Evelyn Weidner an email as she recommends it (above link), she may also know if it affects hummingbirds - Kath :)

I have a similar problem, the leaves are curling up like cauliflower, but I can see the bugs, they are white, about the size of aphids and they fly. Any ideas on what to do...I am also in Southern California.

Hi Folks This may be something that is of no use at all but here in the UK I am trying out a product called ‘Garlic Barrier’ to control pest such as aphids. The manufacturers claim; "Use of GARLIC BARRIER with its sulphur content, in a programme of treatments has the potential to reduce feeding damage from a wide range of insect pests because the treated plants are healthier" and, "When used regularly it improves the overall health of plants, is non-toxic, can be used around edible plants and is safe to use where children, pets and wildlife are present" It might be worth looking into this a bit more to see if this could help Tight....
