Wake up Fuchsia!

Ok, I had her in the cool but not cold garage for the winter, prunned. I brought her out about 1 month ago because we are getting warm here in CA. She still looks "dead". To be honest, I didn't water her over the winter as often as I should have (I know it's not suppose to be a lot, but I did less than that). I haven't repotted her either because I didn't want to repot if I did infact kill her. But I have been giving her water since I brought her out. I've never had a fuchsia before last summer so I'm new to this "winterizing" thing. Did I kill her? What should I do?

RE: Wake up Fuchsia!

Hi Valerie

You should expect to be seeing some new growth after a month. It seems that you may have lost your plant, however, a good way to tell is to scratch the bark of the plant low down on the main stem with your finger nail. If you see green then the plant should start back into growth, if it is brown then the chances are you have lost it.

More fuchsias are lost due to 'drying out' when put away for winter than are usually lost through being frosted.

If you have lost the plant get yourself another and be sure to check out the forum as I am sure there will be lots of new advice coming on here.

If you see green under the bark then you should increase the watering slightly and spray the branches lightly a couple of times daily to encourage new buds to 'break' into growth.

Tight......

Oh tight, thanks so much for your helpfulness. I will infact scratch her and see if she's green under the bark. If I did lose her, I'll be excited to get a new one. Thanks!
