Spring pruning of fuchsias

I am new to this web site am learning a lot about all kinds of things. But am not sure if I can trim back my fuchsia in the spring, it is very!!! leggy. Will it hurt it to do this? Thanks for your time.

Hi Debbie

A couple of points,

1. There is no problem with cutting back your fuchsia at this time of year, you should look for a couple of buds low down on the stems and cut above these (the two buds will give you some insurance that if one fails you should at least have the other).


2. You need to make sure that you don’t over-water the plant as there will be no foliage for this to evaporate.

3. If you have this in a large pot/container you could also remove some of the soil and repot using some new soil to give the plant a boost.

4. On no account should you feed the plant at this time – wait for about six weeks then give a high nitrogen feed at half strength.
