Can I grow hardy Fuchsia in Dallas Texas area?

Posted by Eclectic_Gardener z 8a Plano (My Page) on

I would like to know if anyone has had luck with zone 8a being able to grow hardy fuchsia, Is it too hot or too cold, or both? This is my first try, I bought a few online and they came looking wonderful, I'm just hopeful that I, the heat, or cold do not kill them off. Any suggestions on what I can do to give them the best possible chance of making it? I intend to plant them by my tiny man made:( pond, wish I had a big natural pond. Oh well, I digress. Thanks for any and all suggestions! Rhonda in Plano Texas

Hi Rhonda,
I'm new to this website . . . I found it while doing a search engine on fuchsia. My mother recently purchased one for me. I read your question about them; I don't really know how to use this site completely yet, so I couldn't tell if anyone had posted a response to your question or not. I live in Fort Worth so I have the same question about fuchsia as you do. I would love to hear more about them if you've found anything out since you posted the question. My name is Amber by the way. Thanks for any response you may have.

Hi Rhonda/Amber,
You wouldn't have any problems overwintering them, or growing them in the garden in a shady spot, but as your temps get very high during the summer you might have a job keeping them cool in pots during the summer. As long as you can keep the roots cool eg double-potting you might be lucky.

Have a read in the FAQ (Frequently Asked questions) at the top of the page, for info about growing them or you can take a look at my website, plenty of tutorials there - Kath:)

RE: Can I grow hardy Fuchsia in Dallas Texas area?

Thanks for the respoonse Kath, as a newbie here I was beginning to think my question was so stupid that it did not warrant a response LOL:)
I put mine in the ground by my pond below my Yoshino Cherry that is thriving, it is a very shaded cool area there. I used a bit of argisoak and (some sand to prevent root rot) around the roots to keep it moist, I am hoping for the best. We will see. I bought them from forest farm for $4.50 so if they make it through one summer and make the hummers happy it will have been well worth it.
Wish I had been thinking more about heat zone hardiness
rather than cold hardiness.
I guess becaues I always travel to tropical (HOT) places and see fuchsia everywhere I just assumed they would hate cold,
OH well, guess it will be fun to try:)

I'm to the east of you so I know about the heat- not good for fuchsias! However, last year I read on the web about some new heat-tolerent fuchsias called 'Angels earrings' and low and behold I found them at Lowe's- they really took the heat and bloomed all summer- I never thought a fuchsia could live in this heat. They only got better as the summer went by. The variety was "Dainty'. They are produced by the Proven Winners company- look for the tag down in the pot to make sure. I ordered another variety called 'Cascading Angels Earrings' and it was very trailing and bloomed just as well. Could someone please post a pic in the gallery of what you refer to as Angel's Earrings in the US. I was led to believe they are the Magellanica family, but would like to know for sure, thank you - Kath:)

WOW,
THANK YOU FRANK1965,
You can bet you butt I will be locating some of those for my garden. Do you know if they are winter hardy, or are they annuals?
Thanks again, I am truly grateful

The link below tells alot about the fuchsias- Kath, he seems to think that one of the parents is F. glazioviana. Eclectic Gardener- he says they should be hardy into the 20's so I have already planted some and will heavily mulch them next winter and see what happens. I just posted a pic of one of the overwintered plants that are blooming nicely right now- sorry about the quality had to resize.-Frank

RE: Can I grow hardy Fuchsia in Dallas Texas area?

I am very glad I came across this post---I bought an Angel's Earring fuchsia (that was the only grower label on it, said 'Angel's Earring') because I live in zone 8b and was told by the nursery owners that one of their customers had bought one the previous year and had it in a hanging basket all summer and it bloomed well. I was dubious, but bought it anyway as it was only like $2.99 for a 4" pot. I later bought another one called 'Papoose' that looks exactly like one of the pictures on the link above. Also got a 'Winston Churchill'. God willing, these will not die during the summer. Wouldn't that be awesome, to be able to grow a 'real' fuchsia here outside Houston? (Gartenmeisters are wonderful, don't get me wrong, I have several...it's just that they aren't the same as a 'real' fuschia.) Very happy to have come across this thread.

There are no PW's at my lowe's :(
I am going to another lowes in a couple of minutes, then maybe I will try calloways, I know they carry PW's just cost more $.
Maybe home depot... hmm... but probably not, where are you guys finding them, anywhere else other than lowes?
AND THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE INFORMATION
FRANK 1965, YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

RE: Can I grow hardy Fuchsia in Dallas Texas area?

For me the reference to 'Angel's Earrings' is becoming more confusing than ever.

First of all I was told it was another name used for all fuchsias in the US. Then I was told it was mostly referring to the Magellanica types. Now we have mr. Barney Gonsolves telling us he has bred two separate ones.

As Hannah says the only name on her tag was Angels Earrings. Then she bought a second one Papoose and says it looks like one of the pictures on the link. Hannah the one in the link has f.glazioviana in it. 'Papoose' is a similar flower but shorter, and then you puchased 'Winston Churchill' Both these fuchsias were bred in the US 'Papoose' in 1960 by Reedstrom and 'Winston Churchill' in 1942 by Garson. So did the original meaning to Angels Earrings refer to American bred Fuchsias only?????????????. As you see the fuchsia world gets very confusing - Kath:) :) :)

RE: Can I grow hardy Fuchsia in Dallas Texas area?

Kath- I "think" Gonsolves means that this is the first fuchsia that can be grown all over the US and he didn't breed it- bred by the Suntory firm in Japan. I think PW is a subsidiary of Suntory in the US. Sorry hannah I don't think 'Papoose' or 'Winston Churchill' are part of the "Angels Earrings series"- and I think this is what is causing the confusion.
The PW/Suntory company's marketing strategy seems to be a "series" of heat tolerant hybrid fuchsias - hence the name "Angels Earrings". The only cultivar names that I've found are: 'Cascading Angels Earrings', 'Dainty' and 'Snowfire'.
The link of the PW website that Eclectic_Gardener gave above makes it even more confusing since they mix standard cultivars with the Angels Earrings "series". The three cultivars above seem to be the only real heat tolerant ones so far- hopefully there will be more in the future. As you can tell, PW likes to give their plants rather catchy names.
Eclectic_Gardener: You might want to ask your favorite nursery if they can order them for you- if they carry other PW plants surely they can get the fuchsias too. I'm looking for 'Snowfire' myself.-- Frank

RE: Can I grow hardy Fuchsia in Dallas Texas area?

Oh, hello all! I'm in the Ft. Worth area in TX too, and can't find fuschia ANYWHERE! I found my first one 2 years ago in a SuperWalmart in Waxahachie, TX. I snapped it up, and unfortunately, couldn't learn enough about it before it died. I've been looking for another one ever since....never can find them at Lowe's, HDepot or other nurseries.

Anyone in the DFW area know of a place that actually carries them? Is it too late in the season (not even sure what their season is!)? Have found them online at WhiteFlowerFarm.com, but they only carry one type.

I'd appreciate any pointers in finding this BEAUTIFUL plant,
Kathleen

RE: Can I grow hardy Fuchsia in Dallas Texas area?

I found about 5 different varieties at Home Depot over by Love field in Dallas. They were huge plants for around $12. Only problem was the tags were not correct!! I got a voodoo, a june bride (I think! green top with lavender bottom) and a pink single no clue as to the name! I had never seen them before and am now crazy about them.

KATH-- your web site is a jewel!! I am now determined to make a tree and a bonsai. This is very addicting!!

I'm busy at the moment sorting lots of new photos for the site, during the next month or so hopefully it will be re-vamped and updated - Kath:)

RE: Can I grow hardy Fuchsia in Dallas Texas area?

I have bought a total of 3 fuchsia's. All have died. I repotted them, kept them on my covered porch where they get morning sun and full shade in the afternoon. In about 4 days, the leaves start wilting, then dries up, then die. I water them very carefully, mist morning and evening. The temp is about 90 and above here in dallas, so could that be the problem? I am pretty desperate about now, this is why I am joining a forum for therapy. I will probably go out and buy another one tomorrow. It looks pretty bleek. Help!
