I think I made a big mistake

Yesterday I was very lucky to have found a fuchsia at a garage sale. It was being sold for $4 and the people selling it didn't even know what kind of plant it was.

I bought it in a hurry! When I got it home I decided to try to give it some TLC because it looked like it had been neglected for many years. It hadn't been pruned, it had lots of twisted dead stems, and it had grown into a wierd, ugly shape.

I started by trimming back the obviously dead stems. Then I thought I would transplant it into a different pot, and in the process of trying to get it out, the dam thing broke off from the root ball. I put the root ball in the new pot and poked the broken off part (the main plant) into the soil near the root ball.

It's as good as dead isn't it?
