pruning fuschia

I have a very leggy fuschia, it is now almost the end of April in San Diego - when and how do i prune it? HELP!!! It is growing in the ground and staked up with lots of stakes.

Do you know which variety you have? If it's flopping all over it is probably one of the trailing varieties more suitable for hanging baskets. Most Fuchsias grown in the ground are of the upright or bush types. Fuchsias only bloom on new growth so I would imagine in your zone cutting back the branches and shaping would be a good thing to do early in the year.
