Is it possible to overwater grass lined hanging planters?

I have hanging planters with grass liners. I am watering my fuchsia everyday - until the water drains through the grass liner. I was told that hanging plants need to be watered every day b/c they don't have much soil compared to in-ground plants or plants in larger pots. Since the the grass liner will not hold standing water do I have to worry about over watering?

Hi Helen

The chances are that you will not overwater a hanging basket. Because of the nature of its position and the drying effect of the wind and the obvious effect of the sun you may in fact need to water more than once a day.

Only you will know the situation that the basket is placed in and therefore only you will be able to know when it needs watering. My advice would be to check frequently and take the appropriate action accordingly.

Should the basket ever become too dry you can place this on an appropriate sized bucket with water in and water from above and allow the water from below to seep upwards to give it a good soaking before replacing - oooops though ... make sure the bracket or hook is strong enough as these can be quite heavy.

Hope this helps
