Southgate Fuchsia

Hi Everyone! :)

a man I know owns a nursery and every year he grows fuchsia's along with all his other plants. The blooms are so big and beautiful and the leaves are rich dark and green. I asked him what his secret was. One of his suppliers recommended a chemical that makes the plant bloom these huge blooms! And he told me point blank, once they are sold he doesn't care how they look! The problem with that is, after a month the blooms are so tiny you can hardly see them. What do I do in a case like this??? The plant is still a rich dark green, but the blossoms are horribly small. Of course, he wouldn't tell me what the chemical was! Is there any way that anyone knows of to get those blooms back to a normal size??? Thank you! :)

Hi Catnappur

I am sure that not every fuchsia grower works on the principle that once the plants are sold it doesn't matter what happens to the plants.

There are other 'tricks of the trade' when plants are being sold and for many years growers have been using chemicals to 'dwarf' plants and you will find in the second year the growth is not the same and the plants grow quite large.

Fuchsias are 'gross feeders' and need to have access to plenty of feed, you need to feed with a high nitrogen feed in the early season, a balanced fertilizer in the middle of the growing season and a high potash feed after the last stop (pinch).

The size and amount of the blooms will increase with the extra feeding.

I am not sure howm much you know about feeding your plants so I have added a link to the feed and feeding section of my website.

Hope this helps....

Ello Tight! :)

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the valuable information. :) It has been so hot and humid here in the Northeast for the past few weeks I have been extremely busy watering my huge flower and vegetable garden. Thank goodness we are finally getting a bit of much needed rain! :)

Thanks again!

Stay well and God Bless!

Cherrio!
