Fuchsia Care Question

Hello,

Like many people I killed my first Fuchsia early this spring by setting it out too early. Since it was nothing but a basket of dead twigs I took it off the hanger and set it in a shady spot in front garden area and forgot about it (just bought this house and had more to do). Well I saw small leaves and got so excited I popped it in a shady spot in the ground and hoped for the best.

Now I have a thriving plant with many blossoms.

Problems are:

1. Something is taking bites out of the leaves. I looked up problems with Fuchsias but can't find info on what would be taking large bites out of it without causing any other damage to the plant (no rust..etc..).

2. It has a ton of blooms and they are ALL sitting in the dirt because the plant is not big enough in height. I'm guessing I should never have taken it out of it's container. But it's so happy there! LOL.

Do you have problems with vine weevil in your area Keilamarie? If so that's what it looks like to me, the adults do no harm to the plant except for biting pieces out of the leaves, the grubs that live in the surrounding soil, nibble at the soft white roots. We treat the surrounding soil with Provado which kills the grubs.

You can tell if it is vine weevil. After dark go out and shine a torch light on your plant, if you see a greyish/black coloured beetle that's it, pick it off and stamp on it :)

I suggest you ask your neighbours if they have had this problem, if it's not vine weevil it might be a similar bug that I'm not familar with - Kath:)

Many of the 'hanging basket' fuchsias have been pruned into that lying attitude. If you let the upright stems grow upwards, then pinch them for branching. Later remove the prostrate stems. Can't quite tell the variety but there are some varieties that are low growing and work best when they can drape over a wall.

How do you get your fuchsia buds to open?

RE: Fuchsia Care Question

Mostly it just takes patience, they will open when they're ready. If they don't open or open poorly it's usually due to poor growing conditions. I know, I know, it's hard to wait, even I have popped a bud open to make sure the color of the corolla was right. Not a good practice, you hurt the chances of the flower developing properly doing this.

What causes fuchsia buds to drop before they open?

 o
RE: Fuchsia Care Question

Could be poor light or maybe lack of humidity, Fuchsias with larger flowers seem to be more susceptible to bud drop then the ones with smaller flowers. Try misting your plant a couple of times a day.

Do you have wasps in your area? Could be. I like em.
