Fuchsia Leaves Eaten--need safe pest removal--hummingbirds

I noticed the insects in the fuchsia hanging basket several weeks ago (before I knew about this forum). I have gone to http://www.bonsaigarden.net/ and several other sites checking out the possible pest. And OF COURSE mine isn't listed. Since I don't know what it is called I'm going to try to describe it: approx. 3/8" long, 1/4" wide, emerald green head, bronze colored wings. I do remember that they fly and BITE--I remember thinking that they reminded me of horse flies mating. At that time I had no idea that you could overwinter a fuchsia. I went out today and found no live insects..in fact I had to look hard to find this dead one. The plant has tons of new growth and blooms.

Since I've ruled out Vine-weevil should I wait until I cut it back and treat it with -- Provado (that seems to be the product of choice)?? Or, do you have other suggestions?

This site is a GOLD MINE....so much good information in one spot.

Hi Beacon,
I'm not familiar which type of critters you have there in Sevierville, maybe one of this family, sawfly

or a leafcutter bee

they both nibble pieces out of the edges of the leaves, apart from being unsightly they don't really harm the plant.

Provado also deters white fly as well as killing vine weevil larvae, it might kill off any larvae that is lurking in your soil that was put there by your insects. You could always give it a try, it won't do any harm if you use the type that is watered into the soil. I wouldn't use the Provado Spray, thinking of your hummers - Kath:)

Nope, neither of those are what I had.

Thanks though Kath.

I've pulled out all of the pest products I have...and double checked. We had Jananese Beetles!! I'm assuming that they laid eggs in the soil of this plant (correct?) or just in my yard?

How do I proceed?
