Bought a half-price Fuchsia at Wally World...

Hello All,
I just bought a Fuchsia that was marked down to half price at Wally World. It is upright and staked, approx. 2-1/2 feet tall with no tag. It looks as if they neglected to water it enough. It has some dead leaves and a few dead stems but otherwise it doesn't look too bad. The few flowers that are still on it are purple and pink.

What do I need to do to help this thrive. I want to plant it in a shady bed by my front door and I do not know the first thing about Fuchsias.

Thank you in advance,
Erin---

OK Erin,
As you live in California, zone 9 remove anything that is dead or dying. Now trim the whole plant back by one third. Plant it deeper in the garden than it is in the pot, approx. 3 ins deeper. Give the soil around it a feed, fish emulsion is ok, Keep the soil damp for the first few weeks so that the roots get established in the soil - Kath:)

Also suggest that you put a cutting into water to form roots and a spare plant.

If it came to you with a peaty-type potting mix, recommend that you scrape it off and repot or plant out with a regular mix, especially if you get autumn rains. It could keep things too wet and slow down the production of new roots (or rot them off.) And if it dries out for any reason it's VERY hard to rewet in a garden situation.

Fuchsias tend to bounce back after drought, dropping leaves to survive, and dying back at the tips. You're likely to get another small flush of flowers before winter.

Thanks to the great advice it already looks better! It has filled in and has a few flowers on it and new buds of flowers to come.

Sincerely,
Erin---
