Is it really a fuschia???

Posted by Nikkal_TN z8 TN (My Page) on Tue, Sep 21, 04 at 15:52
| I received several gingers from a friend, and amongst them was a plant labeled only as "red Fuschia". I have searched everywhere I can find for fuschia images, and can't ID this plant. I think it may be what's known as "Cape Fuschia", but I'm really not sure. Can anyone help me out with an ID?
I apologize for the poor quality of these pics...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Nik

Yes Nik, I think it is indeed a Cape Fuchsia which actually has nothing to do with a fuchsia, proper name is Phygelius - Kath:)

Thanks so much for the quick reply, Kath! I will start researching Phygelius, and see what I can find. Thanks again, Nik

Nik, it is neither Fuchsia or Phygelius but Odontonema strictum or Firespike. A zone 9/11 tropical perennial. Will grow well as an annual, loves heat and humidity, but should be brought indoor for the winter.

Gerro, thank you so much!! I researched the name, came up with some pics, and that's it exactly! (Of course, you already knew that LOL) Thank you for the care info also, without your response, I may have left it outside over winter and lost it. Thanks again, Nik
