Firecracker Fuschia Care for Winter

Posted by geswalv 5 Upstate NY (My Page) on

We purchased a firecracker fuschia tree for the first time in the spring and have enjoyed it all summer. The tempertures are getting cooler (40s at night 60s during the day). I would like to keep the plant through the winter, but don't know how to care for it. It appears to be losing some leaves. I hope I'm not too late. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

RE: Firecracker Fuschia Care for Winter

Hi Geswalv,
Carefully remove all flowers and leaves, trim the top back by at least a third.

Now read the link below which is for overwintering fuchsias in pots.

If you are going to keep it in a well lit place and 45f it will start to sprout again after a few weeks. The advantage of this is that you can keep removing the growing tips throughout the winter, after 3 pairs of leaves have formed on each stem, which in turn will give you 'a head-start' for next year.

Please come back if you have more questions - Kath:)
