Water during Overwintering

Hi,

Having lurked over at the kitchen forum for many years while remodeling my kitchen - I am finally getting back into something I love but haven't had time to really explore - gardening and plants.

First of all, I am new to growing fuschias. I received 2 hanging fuschias for mother's day and I am amazed I've kept them alive this long and would like to try to overwinter them. I have been reading the FAQ and lots of posts on overwintering. My plan is to cut the stems back and place in a cool darkish place in my basement for the winter. However, I read that they will periodically still need water. Knowing myself, I am afraid I will forget about them when they are out of site in the cold basement and they will die.

I have seen watering spikes in stores - essentially, a glass bulb atop a long spikey stem that goes into the soil and waters the plant gradually. Would this be a viable option or would it give too much water? Any other advice on how to handle this?

Thanks!

RE: Water during Overwintering

hi before you cut them back i would let yhe plants dry out for a few days this will stop the sap rising after you have cut them back give them a good soak with provado or simular this will kill any peasts that are in the soil then put your plants in a frost free place and just check them every few weeks if they need a drink which is unlikly just give enough to make the compost moist then in the spring you should see new shoots from the base of the plants increase the water and watch them grow good luck.
