hard prune?

| Hi... I have a F. magellanica, which is now about 7 or 8ft tall. It's beautiful, but I noticed this past year that the blooms seem more concentrated to the outer/upper foot of the branches... so I assume it blooms on new growth? Is it appropriate to hard prune the plant to bring the blooms back down closer to eye level? And if so, HOW hard? Any pruning advice would be good actually. |

| Hi I live in West Yorks UK and I prune my various F. magellanica very hard back to within 8 to 9 inches of soil level. I wouldn't suggest that you do it now though, wait until mid March. The 'wind rock' that the plants are suffering at the moment is probaly better than the risk of die back that could occur as the plants this year still have the sap high in the branches. Hope this helps Tight.... |

| Oh good, thanks. How much do they grow then in the season following such a hard prune? |

| They will grow about 4 ft plus if pruned hard, if you want a good variety try and get hold of 'Hawkshead' a brilliant cultivar with similar hardiness and will make a similar amount of growth but is more interesting than the F.mag varieties. you can find out where to obtain 'Hawkshead' from Find-That-Fuchsia. | I like the white flowers, but not sure so much about the green-tipped sepals. I'm not too keen on greenish flowers. But it might go nicely WITH my other fuchsia. I'll keep an eye out for it, thanks. |
