gunnera - has anyone grown this?

Ding dong me, before I found you guys, I had googled gunnera - and ended up exchanging information with the Oklahoma garden group. Whoops. Super nice and knowledgeable folks, but a lot of the info didn't apply to gardening in the Southeast.

So - I will ask you guys - has anyone tried gunnera? It looks so prehistoric! I have an area that will get morning sun - then afternoon shade. It is at the end of our dry creek, so the ground there stays very moist.

I want to try it - but wondered if any of you had tried growing this in GA.

Bagsmom, I've read threads about Gunnera before. Apparently it HATES heat and humidity. The "replacement" is rice paper plant which can grow here. Someone kindly sent me a shoot of it once, and it did not do well for me. However it can when placed in the right location. Unfortunately, I guess I just didn't have the right location!

Oh poop. It looks so cool! Oh well - Big ol' elephant ears make a nice substitute!

Bagsmom,
Fatsia Japonica is also quite prehistoric looking and is evergreen here (even last week!). It doesn't get as big as a gunnera would though...i wish we could grow that too!

Farmers D's - it's a wonderous place and it is at Briarcliff and LaVista, caty corner to the Whole Foods there.
