new plum tree pruning

So I just read this in a UGA extension service publication:

"Immediately after planting a 30-foot, one-year-old

tree in February or March, cut it off at 18-24 inches to

force bud break of lower buds. Then, during the summer,

select about four shoots that are at a 25-30 degree

angle from the vertical, forming the framework for a

"bowl" or "vase."

Really? I bought a plum tree at the Oakhurst sale and planted it last weekend (as some of you know). It looks like it was already pruned at some point in the past. How do I know if I need to cut it back again? Help!
