| I was wondering how many folks that frequent this board have had or are having issues with feral/wild hog causing damage. How are you dealing with this issue and if you are open to having someone else come in to help you with this problem.

| When I lived and worked in coastal SC, wild hogs were an occasional problem in some of the rural areas. I was hired to start a small wholesale nursery on a huge property owned (at the time) by the Vicks descendents, and hogs became quite a nuisance at times. They can be very unpredictable, dangerous, and can do enormous damage in a very short period of time. We ended up surrounding the property with an electric fence, but still had the plantation men come out and hunt them whenever they wanted to. I had to stop walking the 300 yards from the nursery to the main road to open the gates to the nursery after being chased by some pigs. |

| I don't have feral pigs on my property (although my neighbor says there used to be feral pigs here up until about 15 years ago, they seem to be gone now Thank God), but we go walking on a large tract of land owned by a local community college that has a big problem with wild pigs. People who live nearby have to put electric fencing around their yards to keep them out. The landkeepers for the community college encourage year-round hunting to try to keep the hog numbers down. The results didn't sound very encouraging, but hunting probably helps some. The pigs are very hard to trap -- the landkeepers tried Twinkies to bait the traps and even that didn't work. |

| Can you imagine feral hogs on a Twinkie sugar rush? To scary to think about. |

| I have had quite a bit of experience hunting hogs and an adult female can breed twice yearly with around 6 to 8 piglets in each litter. They will breed at about a year old and are very prolific. Predation amongst an established community of hogs is minimal to say the least with the exception of human intervention. If anyone who reads this would like to have help with this problem please feel free to contact me. I have several hunting methods that I have had success with in the past and will give the utmost respect to anyone who will grant me access to thier property. Safety and courtesy are very important to me. I also have quite a few friends all over the state if you are too far from the Atlanta area that I could contact to help any farmers with problem animals. Thanks for your time. Rob |

Didn't know they were a problem in GA. Thought the GA Legislature consumed most of them at their Wild Hog BBQ each year at the opening session! Seriously though, I have traveled through almost every part of the state at one time during the past 40 years, and have never seen one. And those travels took me to some very remote areas from the Mtns to the coast, including some areas near the Okefeenokee and I gather from previous comments that they aren't shy critters! |

The Atlanta Journal did an article on them recently pointing out what a huge problem they are. There was a bit of misinformation about "Hogzilla" a giant hog shot in south Georgia. An even better article was in the New Yorker magazine which traced their introduction to this country to present day distribution. This article had the correct data concerning weight and length of "Hogzilla." If I had them on my property, anyone would be welcome to hunt them. |

| Stonybrook.. I used to live in South Georgia in the Savannah area and there are more hogs than deer or people in parts of that area. I16 and I95 are known to have a bunch of them lying along side the interstate after being hit by vehicles. Up here in the Atlanta area there are concentrations of them north of the city in a few areas but for the most part they are an issue for middle and south georgia residents. Rob |

We've got feral hogs up here on the KY-TN border - on the Ft. Campbell Army base and in Land Between the Lakes - thanks to some local TN goobers who went down to south GA, trapped some feral hogs, and turned 'em loose here so they could hunt 'em with dogs. On Ft. Campbell, they're running mainly in the 'impact area', several hundred thousand acres - lots of unexploded ordnance in there, so it's inaccessible to humans - but they come out into the surrounding crop fields and wreak havoc. |

| I was on a local road this week, that is heavily traveled, when I spotted a large black animal laying on the side. I found a spot and turned around to get a closer look. It was a big female. I don't know if they are always black, but the color on this animal was as solid black as anything I've ever seen. Based on the size that would be a very frightening animal to have after you! I can't imagine any native predator being up to the task, except a bear. |
