The key is to grow ANYKIND of Cucurbita moschata and be especially vigilant against squash bugs. These vines are not subseptible to borers as the stem is tougher and hairier than other varieties of squash. As for mine, it came from organic squash seeds that did not compost in my compost heap! I just dug it out and planted it...and yes, I did save some seed. Do you need seeds?
I'm interested in the radish theory. I love squash of all kinds and never get many zuccini or pattypan anymore due to the borers!

What I read about radish is that its smell confuses the aforementioned devils and they can't find your squash. That's the way I understood it anyhow.

Since radish is so easy to grow I'll just go ahead and try it for myself this year. The downside though is that for this to work the radish needs to be past the point where you would normally harvest it.
