mixing ornamentals and edibles -- jo pye from seed?

How's that for a convoluted subject line?

I have a really big flower bed in the front yard that was mostly bright shade. My neighbor had a HUGE oak removed -- so now I have sun. I'm thinking of mixing in some veggies here and there. I know what to do for my run-of-the-mill vegetables.

But I am also considering trying asparagus and artichokes. These require a perennial bed set-up, right?

Have any of you grown these veggies? Would they do well as garden neighbors?

Next question -- I want some humongous Jo Pye weed. Can it be grown from seed? Or better started as a plant? Where can I find some?

Thanks! I'm gettin' itchy to get out in the garden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know anything about jo pye but , sure, you can mix some vegetables with flowers. Suggestions: Basils (purple, Thai), chili peppers with small pods, flowering onions, thyme(on the edges)and red shiso. They all love lots of sun.

I am attempting to grow Joe Pye weed from seed via winter sowing. I've tried before with no luck but it's been much colder this year, so maybe the seed will break dormancy? It needs stratification if home sowing.

I grow all sorts of flowers in my beds with the veggies.
