Growing Lotus in GA

Hello All,

I have a naturally occuring lake in my backyard, which is a nature preserve.

Here is my question:

1) Has anyone grown lotus in their backyard lake or pond.

2) Do you have list of nursery from where I can order lotus

3) Do the lotus plant really grow from seed or tube(r)?

Any info on growing lotus will be helpful.

I searched all the forums and google before posting above.

Trivedi,

I envy you your beautiful lake, but, if it is a nature preserve, I would make sure that you won't get into trouble with the authorities for growing a non-native plant in it! You might check with the UGA extension for help: http://www.caes.uga.edu/Extension/

That didn't even occur to me...Thank you M.G.

The lake does have lot of green leaves (not sure of technical term for it) growing in it. And I thought I would beautify it a bit.

My neigbors are picky and they even complained when I was building a retaining wall and the county folks came and stopped it for a bit.

So appreciate your help!!

The extension office folks were very nice and promptly responded. There are native cultivars that grow here but advice was to grow in submerged pots so that it doesn't become invasive.

I have lotus growing out of my pond. They are beautiful! Trust me you enjoy them. I have a friend that have 500 different type of lotus. If you ask him nicely for a price of those lotus he would sell you some. His email is haitra@nymph-garden.com

Walter Reeves did a segment on Georgia Gardener about Lotus, a fellow in Savannah growing it, IIRC.

Search the page below for "Lotus" and you'll find the segment he did which covers growing Lotus in GA. I hope this helps you =)

I live just Northwest of Atlanta, GA and have 3 pots of lotus in the ground. They survive the winters very well. I really need to repot them because they have been in those same pots for years. I have been trying to find someone that can help me prune the roots but have not found anyone yet.

I purchased my 3 lotus already in the pots in North GA. I have purchased several lotus plants in the past from the internet but they have yet to survive.
