Best Bargains so far: I found a coral bark Japanese Maple at Home Depot but (as usual) it had no price on it. I took it to check-out and the clerk got a "skew" from a lazy garden clerk and charged me $6.95. I told her that was wrong but she said that it was fine with her. (The same thing happened to me at Lowe's about 10 years ago. I have a treasured specimen Japanese maple from that $7 mistake.)

Home Depot has had annuals for 33 cents each this week. Everyone was loading up---but I am keeping them in my greenhouse until I think the last frost has occurred. Poor unsuspecting newbie gardeners are going to be planting tender stuff too early because they are available in the stores.

I have noticed that when the local stores and nurseries get their fruit trees in they are selling out very quickly. Our Master Gardener organization offered a vegetable gardening beginners seminar and 235 people signed up. Looks like folks are trying to grow some food during these difficult times.

Question: What fruits do you have that are successful? I am starting from scratch in a new house/garden. I have two apple trees, 5 blueberries, a fig and a persimmon. (apples: fugi and winesap)

Hello fellow Carroll Countian:

Home Depot has had a sale out here in C'ton for several weeks of old stock; Did you find your maple out next to the lumber section? That is where they have them all right now. They really have had some pretty good deals!

My best bargains so far have been all of the American (maybe English) Box rootings and mystery clematis that I can dig. There is a construction site in Winston that will be bulldozing them so.... do you need any for your new garden?

You are asking a plant nut if she wants some plants? Of course. I am starting a new garden from scratch. I have been taking plants from my old garden because the house is for sale and there is plenty to spare without making a dent; however, I still will be planting for a long time to come. I had run out of holes to dig at the old house!!

Why don't you give me a call (830-7854) and I can get some out to you. They are looking a little ragged, but I have seen pictures of your former garden's box hedges; I doubt they will be that way for long! Perhaps you could give me some tips?

I have some red canna bulb and some purple iris if you are interested. I also have a bush called glory blower bush or peanut butter bush if interested.

We have already had the Gardening 101 seminar. It was offered here in Carrollton. We will be doing an herb gardening class soon. If you want to come this far west, call our local extension office for details (770-836-8546).

In Atlanta there are two summer veggie classes at Oakhurst this week. The Wed. still has some openings!
