Planting tomatoes in bags

I have read about buying bags of soil, poking holes in top and bottom of the bags and planting into a cross slit cut in bags. Has anyone ever planted their tomato plants in bags of top soil? I seem to get the wilt every year and would love to have some beautiful tomatoes this year. Last year I dug large holes and put new top soil in them with the plants to see if that would help. It was better for a little while but eventually the leaves fell of and I had a skeleton tomato vine. I have a green thumb with peppers and beans. Poor tomatoes.
