I believe the scientific name is Photinia x fraseri. It was more commonly used a generation ago but then it was over-planted and some fungus came through and wiped out a bunch, but sometimes it just affects the foliage. Not native, by the way.

We have a huge one that escaped the fungus many years ago. It is a pretty shrub but it smells so bad when it blooms. And it always blooms at the same time as the Mock Orange so we never get to enjoy the scent of the Mock Orange. I keep it because it blocks the view of our next door neighbor's porch.

I've gone one that has never grown over a foot tall. I don't really want it - I only planted it to see what it would do, and it really has not done anything....strange. I know some folks with specimines that are tree sized (and I must say, not all that attractive when they get that large...

Thanks, I found out the name from the nursery, and the substitute is cleyera, but I believe it needs shade, right, I didn't like it as much, don't want bad smelling flowers and I'm saving my only patch of shade for special stuff. Any other suggestions for that late day red new growth efffect? Native's good.

GGG, ours is one of the tall ones- at least 20 feet. It hangs over the neighbor's fence but he says he doesn't mind- he likes the privacy it gives, too.
