Spreading Plum Yew

I've installed a bed in our front yard, kidney shaped, full sun and I intended to plant a Natchez Trace Crepe Myrtle or similar ornamental tree that has interesting trunks. A friend suggested planting spreading plum jew beneath it. I had also thought of a low growing holly like Clarissa Holly. Any experience with this type of yew?

Any other suggestions for below this tree? I have other gardens, so I want to keep it fairly simple.

Spreading Plum Yew likes a bit of a shadier location in heat.
