They need to absorb sunshine via the green leaves in order to do well next year. It would be better to wait until they are starting to fade (go dormant) - or pull them out and put them in a pot (with dirt) in the sun until they start to turn yellow. Then they can be stored in a cool, dry place until you plant them again in the fall.
